"Travelling" by Tanya Shved

Many people work five days a week, from Monday to Friday. So from Friday evening till Monday morning they are free. When Friday comes people usually know where and how they are going to spend the weekend. Before they leave work they say to each other, "Have a nice weekend! Have fun!"

Very many people go away for the weekend. Some people in Britain go to the seaside and stay at a hotel there. If young people are away from home, they may go home to stay with their parents, their relatives, or friends in different parts of the country.

Some people like to travel by plane or by train, but many families to to the seaside by car as it is very comfortable and not expensive.

I like to travel very much. Last summer I had a wonderful journey, I went to Sochi with my parents. We left Moscow for Soshi and we travelled by train.

Our jorney was very nice. I had a comfortable seat next to the window. We were lucky: it was a through train and we didnt' have to change. It took us 23 hours to get to Sochi.

We arrived at the hotel in the morning. The hotel was very expensive. There were a lot of swimming pools, playgrounds, sports grounds and a spa on the territory of the hotel. The atmosphere was very good. I liked the friendly faces of the people, the food, the music on the radio there. The weather was very warm but never too hot, so I could swim a lot.

I took a lot of pictures of different places in Sochi.  We spent fifteen days there and had a lot of fun at the seaside. Next time we are going to the seaside again. I would like to travel to Paris, Madrid and London.

I suppose travelling is both useful and interesting. If you have such an opportunity, use it and be sure you won't be sorry about it.

"Hobbies" by D.Mishchenko

A hobby is something you like doing very much. Different people like doing different things and they have different hobbies. There are a lot of hobbies: playing computer games, watching TV, gardening, drawing, collecting and so on. People collect stamps, coins, badges, books, pictures and cars.

When my dad was a boy, he was fond of collecting stamps and badges; my mum cared for sweet wrappers. My brother has always collected coins. He has a very good collection and he is proud of it. My brother often says that his hobby is popular with people of all ages. Collecting coins is not easy but interesting. You begin to learn many interesting things about history, about famous people and about different countries. Collecting can teach you a lot of things.

Some people travel and bring back home fridge magnets to remind themselves of the places they have been to. They specialize in magnets with the views or sights of the cities and countries. Such collections are called thematic. When you enter such people's kitchens, you can see at once what places they have visited. These magnets are good decoration, too.

As for me, I collect technical books that are the books that tell me about cars, planes, ships. My friends collect books, too. But collecting things is not the only hobby I have got. I'm fond of rock music. My brother is fond of making videos. But best of all we like to travel.

Topic "Travelling" (8th form)

Modern life is impossible without travelling. The scientific and technological progress of the 20-th century has allowed people to overcome time and distance, to cover in the twinkle of an eye the vast expanse of our planet. The whole world is open now. The limits and frontiers of the previous period have stopped to exist. We can choose any place on the planet and go there on business or for holiday.

Thousands of people travel every day by air, by rail, by see or by road. Travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive too, and sometimes there are delays and cancellations of flights. It is better to book tickets in advance. On the appointed day you go to the airport by car. Soon you`ll board the big air-liner and it will carry you to new lands. You check in for the flight, go through the customs clearance area, the passport control. On board the plane you can look about. In front of you in the cockpit you`ll see a pilot and his crew. Some of the passengers are reclining in comfortable armchairs. There is a kitchenette in the rear part of the plane where the stewardesses are cooking. Presently we take off and in a few minutes the voice informs us about the altitude we are flying. Sometimes it is possible to see the land. It is like a geographical map. Time passes quickly. The plane arrives at the destination on time. What a thrill!

I also enjoy travelling by train. You can see the beautiful scenery of the country you are travelling through. Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping carriages with compartments and a dining-carriage which make even the longest journey enjoyable. A hearty talk with your fellow passengers may be very pleasant, too.

Travelling by sea is very popular. On board the ship there are tennis and badminton courts, a swimming-pool, a cinema and a dancing hall. Unfortunately, one can get seasick but there’s some medicine for it.

Some people prefer travelling by car which in its turn has its advantages and drawbacks. If you are an adventurer you can go hitch-hiking, travel by bicycles, on horseback. Coach tours are not expensive and I like them very much. They are planned as holidays and there is a chance to do a lot of sightseeing and have a good rest at the same time.

Last year …………. I went by coach to a few countries and enjoyed the tour very much. During the ten-day holiday we visited Hungary, Slovenia and Italy. Sightseeing was combined with rest. For a few days we stayed at some lovely small hotels. There was no trouble with the luggage because it was taken care of at every night stop. Moreover, the hotels were carefully selected and booked in advance. ………….
The hotels had such conveniences as air conditioning and laundry service and lots of facilities like workout gyms, swimming pools, bars and restaurants. The chambermaids were efficient and the managers at the reception desk spoke fluent English and sometimes even Russian.

What should be noted, it's important for travellers to know how to behave both in their own country and in foreign places. The spirit of true courtesy enables one to give due consideration to others, to appear and to be at ease in all circumstances, to say and to do the right thing at the right time. Personally, when I travel to a foreign country, I try and learn at least some minimum vocabulary to be able to show my politeness. Also, several maps of the place where I’m going can be handy. I pack my things neatly and try not to take too much luggage. And of course I take care of my camera – and keep kind of a journal with the help of my photos – they act as a remembrance for years to come.

At the end I’d like to say that people are fond of travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, to learn about people’s tradition, to broaden their minds, to enjoy picturesque places. It’s gorgeous to discover new things, different ways of life, meet people, and try different food. If I were asked a question “Where I would like to go”, I wouldn’t be able to answer this question immediately. It’s a difficult question for me because I’d like to go wherever I can. For me, the world is a great book, and I’d like to read as many pages of it as possible.

Topic "Popular Arts" (7th form)

I would like to start by saying that there are a lot of kinds of arts: literature, music, dancing, painting and drawing, sculpture, architecture, theatre, cinema and others. Russia is famous for its great literature, visual arts, cinema, a high standard of theatre and ballet. Moscow is connected with music and ballet, St Petersburg with literature.
The early primitive art began in prehistoric times. Speaking about prehistoric art we usually mean early dancing and the first drawings that prehistoric people made. All primitive people all over the world made music of some sort. It was usually music that had some religious meaning. When it was performed, the spectators usually danced, drummed or clapped hands and sang to the music.
Speaking of ancient art we usually mean Greek theatre and singing and Greek and Roman architecture. By Renaissance art we usually understand the visual arts, theatre and literature of this period. When we speak about classical art we usually mean the arts of the 18th and 19th centuries, and by modern art we understand the arts of this century.

I have always been fond of music, especially ………… (e.g. pop music). Pop means popular music. It was born in the USA in the 50’s. There existed all kinds of music in the USA in those days: blues, jazz, rock and roll and others. Pop appeared, in fact, at the time Elvis Presley began singing. Elvis became the first pop star. He was different and boys and girls wanted to be like him and different from their parents. Pop songs tell us about love and our feelings, having a good time and growing up, dating and dancing. The music makes us happy or sad, it sounds strange or amusing.
especially ………… (e.g. rock music). The 60’s were a time when young people believed that rock music could give love and peace to the world. There were many prominent musicians and singers in America, but it was English groups that changed pop music: the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It should be noted that some great rock musicians died of drugs, though.
especially ……………. (e.g. jazz). Jazz is a type of music and the only art form that was created in the United States. It was created by black Americans. Many blacks were brought from Africa to America as slaves. Different native songs were sung by the black slaves and the music of their homeland was played in America. Jazz is made up of the music of West Africa, the work songs of the slaves and religious music. Jazz music is created on the spot, that’s why a jazz song can sound a little different each time it is played. The first jazz bands were formed at the end of the 19th century; today jazz is played all over the world. On every continent special festivals are held where jazz musicians from the United States, Asia, Africa, South America and Europe meet and share their music.

I enjoy any genre of music; the kind of music I listen to depends on my mood. When I am sad, I listen to classical music, when I am happy, I prefer something more energetic.

Theatre is a popular kind of arts, too. There are a lot of theatres in Moscow. If you like opera you should go to the Bolshoy. The tickets are rather expensive, though. The Maly, which is also world famous, stages dramas and plays based on classical novels.
The first theatrical performances took place in ancient Greece. Theatrical drama, as we understand it today, is based on three things. First there must be an actor or actors speaking or singing. Second, there must be some dramatic conflict (or different relations) between actors. The two sides can be enemies, they can be friends that can’t agree with each other, or they may be divided by misunderstanding. Third, and just as important as the other two, there must be an audience following the progress of the drama.

As for me, I can’t say that I’m a theatre-goer. Nowadays theatres are becoming less popular, and cinema has got great popularity instead. Modern films are full of special effects and people go to the cinema to enjoy them. Lots of people buy TV-sets with large flat screens and special sound equipment, Home Theatres or Home Cinemas, and watch films at home.

Cinema is much younger than theatre. The first people who showed the first movies to a paying public were the Lumiere Brothers of France. The first cinema shows appeared at the end of the 19th century and showed moving people and transport or newsreels of processions and short comedies. The Russian film industry produced such great films as Protazanov’s The Queen of Spades, Eisenstain’s The Battleship “Potemkin”, Podovkin’s Mother, Dovzhenko's Earth and others. In 1927 Warner Brothers made the first film in which an actor sang and spoke, Jazz Singer, which opened a new era in films – the era of the ‘talkies’. The first colour films were made in the 1930s, but the black-and-white films are made even today.

There are different kinds of films: a feature film, a tragedy, a comedy, a drama, a science fiction film, a documentary, a western, a musical, a crime film, a war film, a horror film, a cartoon. I’m fond of ……………….. e.g., historical films and thrillers. The one I’ve seen recently is ………….. , starring …………….. . It’s a ………………… e.g. film about space travel and life in an imaginary future, / in which mysterious and frightening things happen, / a film with lots of music and dance, / about cowboys and life in the Wild West, / a funny film with a happy ending. I can strongly recommend it. It was on at the ……….. .

To round off my topic, I must say that arts brighten people’s lives. They teach us to understand life and people better and to admire beauty. There’s a popular English saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, and I truly believe so. As I said, I personally like music, it helps me unwind after a tiring day; arts help people relax and enjoy their lives. Without arts our world would be quite a dull place, wouldn’t it.

             «Productive skills development - a systematic approach»

David Cotton     Writing Skills - a Systematic Approach
David Cotton’s presentation is on Writing Skills for academic purposes. He discusses why students have difficulty writing academic texts, such as essays, reports and articles. He then talks about the approach to writing which he and his co-writers have used in the Language Leader course books. He looks at the various writing genres which students need to master to be successful in their studies at colleges and universities and uses examples from the intermediate – advanced levels of Language Leader to illustrate his points. One or two examples of students’ work are also presented. David does not deal with scholarly articles written for academic journals though this topic is covered, to some extent, in the Language Leader series.

Irina Tverdokhlebova, associate professor, head of English Phonetics Chair,
                          Moscow City Teacher Training University
Language and Learning in the context of academic culture
The speaker intends to consider in what ways cultural factors are bound with students' language production in the classroom and examine how these factors influence the ways Russian students learn to write and speak in an academic variety of English.

Zhenya Bakin, CELTA-qualified teacher, Academic Writing Centre director at
                           Higher School of Economics.
Using web-tools at post-compulsory language education
