4 Form: Topic "My School". By: Liza Zinchenko, Alex Sakharchuk, Nastya Yantsevich, Mary Pashkova.

MY   SCHOOL
My name is ...... , I'm ..... . I live in Moscow, in Russia. I go to school № 1293 specializing in the English language. Let me tell you about my school.

I began to go to school at the age of six. In Russia the school year usually begins on the first day of September. Pupils don't take any books on that day, they will get them later. We wear a school uniform. In our school girls wear a white blouse and a blue skirt or a dress and boys wear a white shirt and blue trousers. As for me, I wear ......   .

We go to school six days a week from Monday to Saturday and usually have four or five lessons on our timetable. Classes begin at half past nine and are over at about one in the afternoon. We study a lot of different subjects: Russian, English, Maths, Art, Music, Reading (Literature), Handicraft, Nature Study, P.E. My favourite subjects are ............ because................ (Maths: because I like to count and do sums, English: because I like to speak English, P.E.: because I like to run and jump, Art: because I can draw beautiful pictures and so on). We learn a lot of interesting things at school, listen to the teacher, read books, write, speak English in the English class . Sometimes we have classes outdoors: when it is warm in spring or autumn we play volleyball and basketball in the school sports ground; in winter we ski.

Our school is big, there are a lot of classrooms in it. Our class is comfortable and usually clean. There are sixteen desks, the teacher's table, a blackboard and a lot of bookcases in the room. There is a big photo of our form on the wall. There are three white windows in our classroom. The teacher's table is near the window and the blackboard, which is green. Opposite the blackboard there is a brown bookcase with a lot of books, exercise books and some toys which we made in our Handicraft classes. The door is yellow and the floor is brown. There is no carpet on the floor. We haven't got any animals at our school. What a pity! It would be great if we had birds or fish in our classroom.

We always have breakfast in our classroom. Our breakfast break is at 10.10 and we can have a drink, for example a glass of juice or water and eat youghurt or an apple with a cake.

After classes I usually go for a walk with my friends. We like to play different games outdoors, run and jump, play tag. (Play football in the sports ground near my school). I come home at half past two, have dinner and watch TV. Then I do my homework.

All in all, I enjoy going to school. I learn a lot of things here and here are my friends. My best friend is ................ and we often meet after school and play together.

Schooling is the most interesting time in our life. We study and learn a lot at school. We meet many people and make a lot of friends. School becomes our second home. It is one of the places you always want to come back to.

My school is a five-storied building situated not far from the metro station Molodezhnaya. I study at a specialized English school № 1293. I would like to tell you about our school life.

I go to school six days a week. Our classes start at half past eight and last till one o'clock p.m. So we have 5 lessons a day. We study many different subjects: Russian, English, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Drawing, Handicraft, Nature Study, P.E.

The school year is divided into three terms. It begins on the first of September known as a day of Knowledge and finishes in May. Every pupil nas a day-book where teachers put down marks that the pupil has got in classes. During classes pupils answer the teacher's questions, do some exercises, write, count, read. After every lesson teachers give us home assignments. At the next lesson they check them up.

Our school has many classrooms. They are very much alike. The classrooms are light but not large. There are two windows in each classroom with flower pots on the window sills. Each room has a teacher's table, pupils' desks, a blackboard, bookcases, maps and pictures on the walls. There are specialized rooms for studying English, Chemistry and Physics.

There is an Assembly Hall on the fourth floor. It is rather large and light. We usually gather there to celebrate holidays. Before holidays we decorate the Assembly Hall with colourful newspapers, pictures, slogans, balloons and flowers. Our gym and canteen ar on the ground floor.

To do well at school one should do home assignments regularly, be active at the lessons and spend at least two-three hours every day studying. I like studying, my favourite proverb is "Live and learn".

7 form: Topic "English -- a Language of the World" by Mary Timoshenko

ENGLISH -- A  LANGUAGE OF  THE  WORLD

I would like to start by saying that nowadays more than 740 people all over the world speak English and use it. Of all the 2700 world languages, English is one of the richest: it has a vocabulary of about 500 000 words. German, for example, has 185 000 and French -- fewer than 100 000. There are a lot of borrowings from English in other languages, for instance, ‘bank’, ‘supermarket’, ‘department’, ‘business’, ‘office’, ‘class’, ‘career’.

At the end of the 20th century English is more widely spoken and written than any other language has ever been. It has become the language of the planet, the first truly global language. More than half of the world’s scientific periodicals and eighty per cent of the information in the world’s computers are also in English. It is the language of sports, the official language of the Olympics. English is the main language of business.           Correspondingly, people who speak English have better job opportunities.

I study English because my future job can be connected with the use of the English language. If I go to another country, I shall speak English fluently because I study it well at school. I have been learning the language for seven years and I enjoy it because I like speaking English, I like English songs, my friends and I listen to them quite often. I would like to use computer programs in English, travel to foreign countries, Britain, the USA; I would also like to read English and American books in the original. Besides, I’d like to watch English films, cartoons, and educational programmes. Last summer I was in an international summer camp and it was great to be able to talk to others and understand them well. I am going there next summer, too.

In the future I would like to have a pen friend and write letters to him/her. I am also going to attend English courses to master the language. I believe it will be useful for me to communicate with my friends in an English-speaking club and communicate with British teenagers online.

I want to master the language, keep it up and brush it up regularly. In order to do this we usually have grammar and vocabulary drills, read texts and poems, write topics, do tests and dictations, act out dialogues, translate texts into Russian, express our opinion and discuss various ideas, learn poems and topics by heart. We learn new words in context and in isolation, listen to native speakers of English at our listening classes, and discuss what we hear; listen to English dialogues and stories at home. I need to practice my English more to make it more correct and fluent.

All in all, I am happy with the way I am taught English at school because we get a lot of useful and important information at our English classes. We have six English lessons a week and a lot of practice. We work hard in class and do a lot of homework at home. Besides, I read books in English and watch English films. I am proud when I realize that I can get the idea of what I am watching or listening to.

However, learning English isn’t easy. I have some difficulties while learning it. For example, phrasal verbs are hard to remember because the particle or preposition changes the meaning of the verb completely (get on, get off, get in have absolutely different meanings). To learn idioms is a complicated task, taking into consideration that we need to use up-to date ones, not old-fashioned.

Our world is constantly changing, and the English language is and has been changing, too. We need to keep up to date learning English and I’m sure we’ll be able to overcome all the difficulties in the process of learning.
